wrap up something special

Just a couple of quick ideas if you are in need of a gift this weekend for a special lady in your life.

Head to a craft store or even a dollar store and pick up a plain wood hinged box. Then fill it with little gifts like these.

For someone who loves to wrap pretty gifts and send happy mail, fill a box with stationery, gift tags, vintage stamps (or current ones), baker's twine and little embellishments such as mini clothespins and cotton spun toadstools.

I love gifting like this because you can have fun with it. The box below is filled with a soy candle, soaps wrapped in japanese paper, a pretty bracelet and a favorite hand cream.

Tie your box with string or ribbon and add a simple handmade tag embellished with my favorite thing - Washi tape and there you have it, a pretty and personal gift to give.

There are so many ways you can fill these boxes.
Here are some more ideas:

*For the gardener - pretty garden gloves, jute twine, floral scissors

*For the baker - pretty recipe cards, bakers twine, parchment muffin cups, vanilla beans

*For the crafter - pretty craft supplies

Hope this helps if you are stuck on a gift idea.

PS: Toadstool cards, baker's twine, tags, mini clothes pins and vintage stamps are in my shop or will be soon.

Gift Guide for Cooks...

I love to buy gifts for friends and family who love to cook.

So, I decided to put this little gift guide together to share some ideas for gifts for the gourmand in your life.

How about pairing an inspiring cookbook with spices?
I absolutely love Yotam Ottolenghi's cookbooks. His latest, Jerusalem looks amazing.

Pair it with a set of spices to compliment the recipes.
The Spice Trader is a favorite shop of mine, located in Toronto, they ship too! I also spotted gift sets at Chapters.

Another cookbook I would love to add to my collection,
La Tartine Gourmande from Beatrice Peitre. Have you visited her blog? It inspires...

These handmade dishes from Elephant Ceramics would be a lovely accompaniment.

This is a beautiful cookbook from another favorite blog of mine, Cannelle et Vanille. Small Plates & Sweet Treats, Aran Goyoaga.  Perfect for those who have gluten allergies. Her recipes are delicious and beautiful.

Hand printed tea towels from Rincon Road on Etsy

Lillet, say no more. I love this aperitif on the rocks in a classic french Duralex Picardie tumbler.

I've also had my eye on this print from MengelDesign on Etsy.
It would look great in our new coffee station.

Perhaps some lovely new coffee cups too, Heath Ceramics.

So, I just realized that this Gift Guide is also a personal wishlist. Hmm..

Old Fashioned Holiday Treats & Packaging!

Babiekins is one of the loveliest online magazines.

I don't just say that because I am a proud contributor. It is full of beautiful images, inspiring ideas, amazing fashion and entertaining ideas.

The latest issue of Babiekins is available now here. You can see my story "Ice Box Cookies" on page 129. It was so much fun to create. I had a great time pulling out some of my much loved Christmas decorations and baking up a storm.

Here are some of the images you can see in the magazine as well as a few more.

Be sure to visit Articipe on Etsy for great holiday gifts! One of my favorite items on the shoot was the custom, hand-lettered recipe prints from Articipe on Etsy. It was specially created for the shoot. I think this is a great gift for someone who loves to bake or cook..maybe one of your Grandma's recipes?

Vintage Christmas ornament boxes make ideal packaging for homemade treats. Line the box with cupcake liners like these festive ones from Sweet Estelle and fill.
Decorate!
Roll your cookie dough in sanding sugars, sprinkles or crushed candies.

Wrap it up!

Other useful packaging supplies include: glassine bags and kraft paper bags. Add a personal touch by adding Japanese washi tape, vintage paper or stamps to embellish. Schoolhouse inspired notepaper bags and cupcake liners are from Sweet Estelle.

Vintage Christmas cards can be re-purposed into festive tags.
Re-use coffee tins, jam jars, and boxes to create pretty packaging.

Stamped cotton muslin bags make great packaging.
These are available in my shop and can be personalized!

Happy baking & eating too!

a bridal tea

stamped muslin bags filled with organic, fair trade tea

Today I was putting the final touches on the favor bags I was creating for a bridal tea. Natural, muslin bags were stamped using a vintage stamp set and filled with organic, fair-trade Peppermint Amour tea from David's Tea.

Inside each bag I tucked a card with brewing tips. The muslin bags were tucked inside simple white cups from Ikea, wrapped in cello and a personalized tag was added for use as both a favor and a place card.

This is the lovely color palette I was working with for the invitations, gift tags, thank you cards and favors.
I had fun sampling the vast variety of teas available at the store. I discovered a few new favorites while I was there that are perfect for brewing as iced tea...yum!

I hope the bride and her guests have a great time at the bridal shower this weekend at the elegant Windsor Arms Hotel in Toronto. I hope they share photos!

I feel spring in the air...

It's time to wash away winter from the front of my house. Is it too early to put something living in my urns? Probably...

Oh well, at least I can refuse to put my winter boots back on. I'm loving my new wellies. Today I went for a walk in them. We took the kids down to Little Italy today for some gelato. That feels like spring!

Here are some Etsy finds that make me smile. Enjoy.

Smile Pillow in Yellow, Honey Pie Designs

Map Paper Tote Bag, My Paper Garden

Mid Century Green Fan, Tom Laurus

Handmade vegan, organic soap, Prunella

Vintage Style Flower Necklace, Sweet & Simple

Handmade biodegradable seed starters, Love By Bean
I can't wait for these to arrive. I ordered some for the kids to experiment with seeds.

"Hills" Limited Edition Print, Leah Duncan

Hanging Vase, Tortoise Loves Donkey
West Elm is selling these glass style hanging planters..saw them today :)

Is it spring where you live?
What home decor/garden things do you do to usher in spring? I would love to hear.

Happy holiday Etsy finds

Some things that caught my eye this week on Etsy...

This cream patent leather carry case from French English is the perfect modern but ladylike bag.

I have had my eye on this vintage jewel bracelet "the dutchess" from Dreamy Vintage for awhile now.

Fun hostess gifts, tree ornaments or to adorn your gifts this holiday trio of vintage silver spoons by Hammermann is a favorite.

I know a sly little guy who would love this sweet fox stuffy pillow from Birdmafia.

A festive looking handprinted floor cushion from Mookah would be perfect in my daughters bedroom.

Leilalou has the sweetest linen stuffed toys including this wee linen boy mouse!

I'm almost done my Christmas shopping and I'm proud to say I bought many gifts from Etsy shops. I love giving handmade gifts.
